I doubt much action on the beach for a while, ocean stripers don't like the cold, or so I am told, so migration north from warmer climes is a while off, and the shubie school won't leave the lake until the ice is off Grand Lake. I don't know how thick it is there, but some of the dartmouth lakes still have 30" of ice.

I was driving around yesterday looking for open waters.

Shubie is clear approx to where St Andrew's River empites into the Shubie. Stewiacke is ice covers up past Stewiacke East, I never made it to park to look there.

With warm weather a bit of rain the other day, the ice is starting to break up. Normally we are catching smelts this time of year.

Warm weather all week and rain forecasted for Tues and Friday this river should be open by mid to late week.

Typically smelt will not run up river due to ice in lower levels along rivers, they tend to get crushed by the ice but urge to spawn may make them move as the ice breaks up a bit more.

Also Dates for Fishing Derby on the Stewiacke are set of May 8 and 9 hope to see you there

Well normally the smelt and other bait fish are coming into the river at this time. Ice slowed them down a bit but ice is clearing up in the Shubie past the ballfield but the stewiacke still has plenty of ice.

I hope by this time next week Ppl can actually fish these rivers

the 9 Mile river at Hwy 102 finally let go, and lots of water flow and ice movement. With the higher water ice is not getting caught. But again water level high and dirty but ice is moving out pretty quick from that river and into the Shubie. Another couple of days and it should be good!!

Stewiacke River is ice free right down to the Petro Can at the rapids by the pine tree. One or two more tides and the Stewiacke should be ice free completely. A lot of ice moved down from yesterday so very soon.

No signs of eagle or gulls on the rivers as of yet and I was in Enfield last night around 10 pm didnt see nothing and the water was up above that first landing of the weir.

Hopefully this river will come alive this week

There was quite an ice jam at Stewiacke River Park. When it broke on yesterdays high tide it went across the road but both rivers are free now. We saw an Eagle eating something that looked like another large bird. That pair of Eagles has stayed in the area of the fishing shack on Back Road all winter. I don't know how they survived. Must be a few missing cats around town.

hey Dom,

You so bored you are trolling for a controversey? Asking questions you know the answer to............?
I assume he is questioning a legit answer ....is it DFO or DNR making the regulations , because really if its DNR(Inland Fisheries)then the regulations have zero effect in tidal waters as it is DFO job . Not trolling , he is asking for answers .And if its DFO then they cant make regualtions in inland waters.....great question .....
