sand worms do work better than most bait for salt water species. You can find them in the sand around clam beds/mussel beds. The best time to dig them is at the lowest part of low tide close to the water edge. You now need to buy a license to dig them its between $11.00 and $15.00 have not bought one in two years or more.

P.S. Be careful they bite have not been bit but they have pinchers that come out of their mouths that they use to dig into the clams with.
