I'm rather concerned for the safety of the golfers. Perhaps it would be a good idea to spread gravel around the the entirety of the ice surface to make for better traction...
good point I have slipped and nearly made an A$$of myself going into the club house with those plastic cleats on a damp morning

  • A simple clean-up of the area in the spring. Gather a dozen fishermen with some garbage bags, do a clean-up, get the media involved, take lots of pictures to post on the internet etc. If we make ourselves look like the good guys we will get more assistance from everybody.

we are just being smart a$$e$$, atleast I was.
You are are absolutely right this is the best approach you attract more flies with honey.
keep up the good work man

I just cannot believe the arrogance and attitudes of some people. I own lakefront property and regardless of what I or any of my neighbours think, the water in this country is accessible to EVERYONE as a right. I think the fisheries folks should read their own handbook - anyway, I personally think it's pathetic that a govt agency would cowtow to any small group, but it looks like that's exactly what they did. If anyone organizes anything for this lake over the winter, or indeed in the spring, please post it here so that all of us who take exception to this foolishness can show up and participate. Oh, and if the idiot that likes to irritate people who are doing absolutely nothing wrong is reading this, I'll be the guy in the camo kayak this spring fishing in your lake. I encourage you to throw a "stick" (or anything else) in my direction - I look forward to "discussing" it with you when you do. Ouird, I think this is the lake you were telling me about for ice fishing. Looks like that's not gonna be happening. PM me if you know of any other decent spots.

So far what I see is only common concerns and deciency issues. It doesn't call for the illimination of an ice fishery, though marking and identifying used and discarded holes. It does though point to a study done in California as to what "stocking" means, FAQ, etc. I thought that was weird.

So what is happening to the winter ice fishing oppertunities with this lake, and why was it retracted after only two - three years?

I commend the efforts of those who took the time and inititve to clean up the lake! Good on ya! As well I noted that the ADOPT A STREAM PROGRAM had some doings with the lake as well. Seems weird to accept the help, time and money of the adopt a stream program, then in turn remove the winter fishery. Is there something I missed here, or is the website a smoke screen? I am confused indeed.

I've encountered the swimming idiot before and one time he did have his dog, started throwing sticks right at my hook for the pup to fetch and all I could say to him was "If that dog gets hooked it's gonna hurt him and it won't be my fault." This guy got mouthy.

I've seen people from around that lake dump their lawn clippings in the lake, wonder if they are aware of how much pollutants they were dumping in "their lake"?

I'd love to go out there this winter and just drill a heap of holes everywhere, not fish, just make a nice Pacman maze, but I'm sure that would end badly
lol Still.... I can say I'm helping the wild life under the water breathe and the skaters and home owners should be ashamed that they aren't helping lol

I hate whiners
was this a little white fluffy toy dog cause if it is he was skiing around the lake and led his dog right through my brothers line and set the hook in its shoulder then has the nerve to just leave his dog behind for my brother to deal with his wife later came by and said its his dog he should deal with it we released the dog after i suggested a small shore lunch and still laugh about it today oh yeah my brother and i are both dog owners and would never leave our animals to someone else anybody thatwould turn their back on their furry partner is just a total %^%#*^*^ that can mean what ever you want it to. any way we should have a meet and greet there just a barbecue and some beer and some fishing discussion id personally like to really get under his skin just to prove you cant get rid of us like my dog i can be very spiteful

Yes it was, and what I find ironic now that I think about it is there's a leash law in effect around that lake... lol I guess that guy could've had it worse should someone call the SPCA in regards to a "stray wandering dog" in the area eh?

fishboy, it's funny that almost all the main concerns you mentioned about the lake is about lawn care and pollutants, I find it funny that the home owners would try to pin the declining amphibian population on fishermen when they are polluting the lakes. As a former reptile / amphibian specialists (years ago for a company, no official diploma) I can tell you that an amphibians skin is much more sensitive to lawn chemicals than discarded fishing line (although I DO NOT appreciate any kind of sloppy garbage disposal but just to make a point).

Hey Gang,

Just re-read this thread and can't believe I am posting this for the third time. Going to have to start copying posts and saving them on my computer. Let's hope their are no more server issues.

I e-mailed, Wilf Woods from the NSFAH and stated my concerns regarding this matter. Mr. Woods, graciously addressed the issue and got back to me. The gist of the exchange was addressed in an article on the NSFAH Newsletter. Here is a link.

Oathill Lake Winter Rainbow Season Lost : http://www.nsfah.ca/news/view.php?id=127

To quote the newsletter,"I followed up with Inland Fisheries and the advised me that they had in fact decided not to stock rainbow trout this fall and that since there were no rainbow there was no sense having a fishing season for them on Oathill this winter. To offset the loss of Oathill for the winter fishery they have opened seasons on Lewis and Round so the fish formerly stocked in Oathill will be used there. They assured me they would be stocking Oathill twice this spring with speckled trout for the open water season.

They pointed out the difficulty of managing a public resource in the face of competing interests and said their decision was reached only after an exhausting round of consultations with the public, MLA's, City Counselors and interested parties."

"An exhausting round of Consultations with the public....and interested parties"???

Be it not for me to question Inland Fisheries, BUT, as a member of the public AND an interested party (angler), I was unable to find any Public Notice of a meeting to discuss this issue. Nor was the issue brought up at the Fall RFAC Meeting or published in the Handbook, under Changes for 2011.

Simply put, this decision seems to have been reached without consultation with one of the main stakeholder in the matter - the anglers. Hmmmmm

I believe this is a precedent that should concern all anglers. A "group" of property owners has been granted a change to the regulations and a stocking program, simply by bitching the loudest.

So does this mean that Property owners around other lakes, can have them closed to angling, simply by pissing and moaning, violating the Wildlife Act (Sec. 38) by interfering with anglers lawfully fishing and then have the regulations changed?

This small issue could present a precedent and should concern all anglers.

My 3 year old daughter caught her first fish on Oathill, just off the boardwalk section. I would love to take her and my 2 other children ( who also love to fish) there in the spring for a full day clean-up. What ever I can do to help organize or contribute let me know. [email protected] I live in Shearwater and am on the community council here. I have helped oganize a community wide cleanup for the last two years, which btw was attended by our MLA, and were a huge sucess. I think this is definately the way forward.
