Five wild Atlantic salmon population segments in Atlantic Canada and Quebec have been designated endangered and one as threatened, with a further four as of special concern by COSEWIC, Canada's independent scientific body that recommends official change of status for species.

In Nova Scotia, Southern Uplands Rivers such as the St. Mary's are included. The Eastern Cape Breton Rivers like the North as well. Northumberland Strait rivers like River Philip and Wallace are to be listed as of Special Concern.

Important populations have been designated as of special concern, while several others are listed as not at risk.
