Hey buddy, a great place to fish from shore is Grand Lake by Lock number 5. There is a river running into the lake from Fletchers Lake. If you fish the lake below the falls you can get trout and landlocked salmon there in April. In May, other fish come in including smallmouth, stipers, pickeral, gaspereaux, shad, perch, eels and catfish.

Hey Mort,

Grand lake is a great place to try, hope you have some hip or chest waders as the water can be very high in the spring. The lake is about a half hour drive from central Halifax. There are several city lakes that have stocked rainbows and brookies if you're desperate for some action, just search the on-line fisheries site. Additional information is supplied with your licence, so check that out too.
If you have a car, and we're assuming you do, then you should try a trip to the Wooden's River conservation area. The brook trout action can be incredible on the fly rod, and the area is all catch and release. Do a search on the web and you should find it, complete with directions.
