I am a Masters student at Dalhousie and I am conducting my research on Alewives. I'll be heading out for sampling this Spring. I am already will be sampling in the Shubenacadie, Annapolis, Annis, Gaspereau, Kennetcook, LaHave, Musquodobit, River Herbert and River Phillip. Are there any other rivers that have alewife runs?

Thanks

Do they also run into the rivers and brooks in Pictou and Antigonish counties?
I've seen them on a foot path behind Shearwater base closer to Eastern Passage. You walk about 2 kms and then you find a big ol' bridge and a holding pool that runs into a small river that ends up at Morris Lake. Tons of them there when they're running.
There are a quite a few good runs of them on Cape Breton Island.
Just wondering if any one knows when gaspereau usually run or where i could find out this info?

Hi;

Depends on water temperature. In the Schuby/Stewiacke system the run begins somewhere between the last week of April and the first week of May and goes on into June. Needless to say you'll see them downstream before you see them well upstream. May is your best bet just about anywhere, I would hazard to guess.

Hi all,

good day. i'm wondering if they are running now. Thanks!

M.
smelt are running now the gasperou will be next !
Gaspereau are now in the waters of HRM, I saw hundreds of them today but did not have a net ...................

James
Be advised that there are weekly closures for Gaspereau using a dip net. Shubie system, I believe is every Friday at 0800 to Sunday 0800 - closed to dip-netting. Therefore you can only angle for Gaspereau during the weekly closure. Netting during this time could result in a $300 + SOT ticket and seizure of fishing gear etc.

Possession limit is 20 fish.
Very true very true same goes for smelts. Do you have any idea why the bulk of the weekend is shut down?

James
I do not have the "100% answer"...but I believe it is to reduce weekend warrior types. Conservation is the main reson... other area have different days etc.
Actually I was fishing for trout in the Schubinacadie river today with a work and spinner and Bamn... I was right excited cause a fisherman there told me they are catching a few big browns there this year. I was so excited cause this was putting up a hell of a fight for a trout - reeled it in and seen this weird looking fish. So I walked up the river a bit and asked a gentleman fishing 'you know what the hell this is' and it was a Gaspereau. Didn't know they took worms. He also said they sucked for eating and most guys just throw them back. Any of you guys eat them?
sometimes they will take a worm or a fly ...fun catching them.

Hey Grasshopper,

They're as boney as all get out. Yet, I know some who like em. Kind of like a Herring. Actually a herring family friend. See: Alewife

There great fun on a fly. I call them Shad Light.

Have Fun,

Terran
Hi all,

Regards,
M.

Hi Terran;

As resident know-it-all in chief,
, I am forced to inform you that what we call gaspereau [acadian] or kyack [native?] are actually 2 species of herring. The 2 species are Alewife and Blueback Herring. They can only be distinguished from each other internally by a trained observer. Externally they are the same. And, I suspect, taste the same, too.

cheers,

chuck

ive salted alewifes befor and they turned out pretty good, theres nothing better then salt fish and potatoes. I think they will take little white and red flys, though ive never had luck fly fishing them.
Hi All,

Does anybody know where a good spot to fish for alewives in the Nictaux River?

The alewives are running nicely now!

Thanks,
Meghan

Hey Chuck,

Sooooo, as in most families they're kin but not friends?

Thanks for the information, Chuck. I never mind being "clarified".

Tight Lines,

Terran
