You can use the same types of baits pretty much for both fish really. topwaters like floating raps, buzzbaits, etc. are pretty good choices. Soft plastics like zoom fluke type baits, gulp minnows, twister tail grubs work well too.
Smallies I found over the years will hang around weeds like lillypads and such, but much more prefer rocks for structure. Pickerel will lay right in the weeds maybe in 6'' to a foot of water and wait for an easy meal to pass.
for smallies find some nice rocks or fallen logs in your lake and try twitching some floating raps, poppers. or pitch a jighead and grub around the area, this should land you a few fish.
For pickerel toss some bright colored floating raps, or buzzbaits along the weed edges and retrieve them fairly quick, or rig a fluke or soft jerbait weedless and fish it through the pads. hope this helps ya out a bit
