A brief announcement in today's Chronicle Herald:

Officials probe cause of fish die-off

July 28, 2013 - 4:50pm By THE CANADIAN PRESS

Government officials are investigating a possible fish kill in western Prince Edward Island.

The localized die-off was noticed on Friday afternoon in Trout River, where dozens of fish were found dead or dying.

Ken Mayhew, a spokesman with the Department of Agriculture and Forestry, says the cause of the fish death is unknown.

But he says the province should know more by today.

Trout River has had significant fish kills in recent years caused by pesticide runoff.

Not to be critical, but isn't this an (almost) annual event over there?

You would think that their Dept. of Agriculture and Forestry (an interesting combination) would have been able to identify the culprit (most likely the same one as the last few times) and dealt with it some time ago.

Pesticide run-off should be an addressable and punishable situation, if it is the cause? Why the annual event?

Sad but true, Perry. Only wish the fines were more substantial and more of a deterrent.

Hi All
We always read about PEI fish kills.
It could be kills are noticed there but
not in Nova Scotia and get reported.
It is interesting that the daily trout limit there is
16 versus 5 in Nova Scotia. In spite of the kills.
And all the water very accessable.
Something is being done right. No SMB or Picks
Could that be the reason?
Enjoy the summer

I had a cottage in PEI (Hunter River) for many years and fished there alot,, reason for no SMB or CP is that there are very few fresh water lakes..and no one has bothered to carry them to the Island..lots of rivers that mostly are salt water fed,,, lots of good sea trout.

Due to the fact that most rivers flow thru farm land is the reason for the fish kills,, especially after heavy rains..also most rivers are easily seen from roads or farm land so the damage is noticed easily.

Also very litte fishing pressure on the Island..once the sea trout run is done very few locals bother to fish.
