Hi there,

I am looking for some advice for mackerel on the fly.  I have gathered little info from various tackle shops down here in BC.

I have attached an Image of the flies that were recomended by local shops.

I am planning on bringing my 5/6wt so I can use it for both mackerel and trout.

I am thinking of using x7 and x6 tapered leaders, would this be too light for the mackerel?

My location will be in Cape Breton, most likely fishing from the Port Hawkesbury or Mulgrave Wharf

The following flies were recomended

  • Minnow Imitation
  • Prawn Imitation
  • Shrimp Imitation
  • Epoxy Salmon Fry
  • Anything that has alot of sparkle &  shine..

Red and White feathers with sparkle work were I'm at the best, U can get a away blue and white, but the red and white combo is better for here...

I'd go with a heavier leader/tippet combo for the macks and those flies. 3X ought to do the trick.

Enjoy your visit!

I started reading a book about anti-gravity and I just couldn't put it down.

What hook size would you typically use when tying flies for mackerel?
