What is the purpose of a tag on a trout fly? I have seen a few patterns that call for a tag but wondered why and of what use it is. Salmon flies use tags in most of their patterns but I just thought it was for dressing the fly up a bit but maybe not. Thank you.

hi Tim

I always figured it was to make the fly swim flatter

in the water. Wither that is so I'll leave that to others.

Material at the end of the hook give resistance to the

water making the end float up.

Some  flies have a tendency to do a Titanic

if this is good or bad I'll leave to the angler.
